Singularity: chapter four

       “Ximena….that’s a rabbit…”

       “Not just any rabbit…he’s dangerous.”

       “It’s a bunny! How could it ever be dangerous?!”

       “It is,” she insisted, “he’s an experiment gone wrong.”

       “Oi, it’s a ‘e. And I ‘ave a name, you know…”

       “It…can talk. Could this day get any more ridiculous?!” Jayra was less outraged than exasperated, but still pretty outraged.

       “Of course I can talk…bloody ‘ell, whaddaya think I am, some dumb animal?”

       “Well you don’t look like Einstein…”

       “Oi I’d watch what I say if I was you, ’uman.” the rabbit bared his teeth—not very menacing, considering that rabbits are herbivores, and have dull teeth.

       “Ximena, haven’t I told you not to mess with the laws of nature?”

       “You’re one to talk, professor.

       “Let’s not speak of the past, Ximena…”

       “No, let’s. Are you not the man who founded h.e.l.i.x.? Are you not the professor who taught all of us genetic manipulation? Furthermore, did you not create countless creatures for your own hedonistic pleasure?”

       “No. I’m not. I’m not the same man anymore, Ximena, people change and I have!”

       “I’m afraid not, doctor. You are the same scared child you were then, and always will be.”

       “….oi, this is like a soap opera,” the rabbit remarked sarcastically.

       “Shut up, E970. You are a prisoner. Act like one.”

       “…You’ve changed, Ximena.”

       “Of course I’ve changed, Jayra. I’ve had to. After you abandoned us, I had no choice. H.e.l.i.x. thrives without you. Now take the rabbit and leave.”

        Jayra did not need to be asked twice.

       He took the rabbit and left.
